“III” (2019)

Artist Statement:

Created during her Residency at TAXI in Denver, III explores Romelle’s relationship with the places she has lived over the last two years: Detroit, Miami and Denver. III is diverse in scale—combining large canvas panels with smaller ones, and marks the first use of spray paint in Romelle’s studio work. 

Painted outside in the dead of Colorado winter, Romelle’s giant panels of high-voltage color are a deliberate attempt to demand a feeling of sunshine, to channel the emotional saturation of her memories and to pull herself out of the winter. There is a dark element lurking in her effervescent seas of light, whether it’s a hint of nostalgia or the threat of ignition in The Strike of a Match. The harnessed chaos of the works presents a portal for reflection as well as a warmer, brighter and more optimistic state of mind.
